Why your toilet flush is weak

A sluggish flush usually comes down to low tank water, a short flapper cycle, scaled rim holes or a partial clog.

In a nutshell

A weak flush usually means too little water reaches the bowl fast enough. Check the tank water level, the flapper chain, the rim holes and the jet, then the drain. Most causes are inside the tank and quick to fix.

Start with the tank

Lift the lid and flush. The water line should sit near the mark on the overflow tube, about an inch below the top.

If it sits lower, the fill valve float is set too low. If the flapper drops shut before the tank empties, the chain is too slack.

Rim holes and the siphon jet

Under the bowl rim is a ring of small holes, and at the bottom is a larger jet. Mineral buildup narrows them, so water dribbles instead of rushing.

Many Rosemead bathrooms date to the city's 1950s building boom, per Census table B25034, and older bowls have had decades to collect scale.

When it is the drain, not the toilet

If the tank is right and the bowl rises slowly before draining, look downstream. A partial clog in the toilet trap or the branch line slows the siphon.

If other fixtures gurgle too, the problem may be in the main line, which needs rooting rather than a plunger.

Low-flow bowls and older bowls

Toilets made since the 1990s use far less water per flush. EPA's WaterSense toilet page notes that older toilets can use as much as 6 gallons per flush.

A modern bowl designed for less water flushes well when the parts are set right. An old bowl fitted with low-flow tank parts often does not, which is a sign the whole toilet should be replaced.

Rosemead owners ask

Can I raise the water level to get a stronger flush?

Only up to the fill line marked in the tank. Higher water runs into the overflow and wastes water.

Will vinegar clear the rim holes?

It can soften light scale. Heavy buildup usually needs to be cleared mechanically.

Why does my toilet flush twice to clear?

A short flapper cycle, low tank level or a partial clog are the usual reasons.
